Emmanuel Villanis - Lucrece
This fine bronze bust by Emmanuel Villanis (1858-1914) shows Lucrece (Lucretia) a Roman woman who was known for her virtue and beauty. She had been raped by the king’s son, Sextus Tarquinius, one of her husband’s relatives, and even though her husband declared her to be fully innocent, Lucretia preferred to kill herself as to not get away without a punishment. This act caused an uproar and has been linked afterwards to the end of the Roman monarchy and the beginning of the democracy in 510/509 BC. The bronze shows the beauty with a crown in her pinned-up hair. She is dressed in a softly falling garment that at the same time undresses and dresses her and makes her both vulnerable and decided.
The bronze is in very good condition, with only a few traces of age and use. She is inscribed in relief “Lucrèce“ and marked on the back „Societé des Bronzes de Paris“ and a scratched abbreviation “L g”. The artist signature “E. Villanis” is located at the shoulder. The base is of rouge marble and is in good condition.
This can be sold together with "Diane" as a pair - please enquire re price.
