Desdemona - Pre-Raphaelite school
This is an interesting and beautiful oil on canvas from the 1860s shortly following the launch of the Pre-Raphaelite movement in 1948. it depicts Desdemona from Othello. Lovely rich colours surrounded by a gilt gesso frame. Dimensions exc. frame are 57.5cm x 37. Stamped on the canvas is "Prepared by Winsor and Newton , 38 Rathbone Place, London". The firm operated from this premises up until the1930s. We have dated the picture to around 1863 or shortly later - this was possible due to the canvas stamp and Alec Cobbes study "A Classification of Winsor and Newton canvas stamps from 1839 to 1920" - Studies in Conservation 21, (1976) 85-94. for which we are gratelul.
