Auguste Clésinger (Jean-Baptiste Auguste Clésinger d.1883) was an eminent 19th-century French sculptor and painter. He created many large monumental pieces in both marble and bronze. A fine, well detailed pair of quality bronzes, one signed by the artist, “J.Clesinger,1862, Rome” and both stamped “Barbedienne Fondeur” also with the “Collas Reduction” lozenge. One in the form of a female Bacchante or follower of Bacchus and the other with cloven feet, a Satyr, Faun or Pan holding his pipes. These pieces feature in the 1886 Barbedienne catalogue titled “Bacchante and Satrye” (copy available). Height is 6 1/2 inches. The composition as with the eponymous marble group in the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
